When should I start talking with a home integration company before a build?
A customer should have their AV/Automation company picked before or at the time they choose a builder or architect. It is that important of a factor within the home. This will allow adequate time for the homeowner to choose the equipment they will want to use and entertain with during the design process. There are specific wires that need to be in place for our systems to function correctly and reliably. The AV/Automation company will be in direct contact with the builder to plan the pre-wire and trim. Once the builder has completed his portion of the project, the AV and automation equipment is ready to be installed.
First steps before calling your home integration company with issues
There are a couple of go-to steps that are recommended before calling in to an AV/Automation expert. The first step should most always be to perform a power cycle of the units that are having issues. A power cycle involves physically removing the power cable from the unit for 30 seconds, then plugging it back in. This fixes a large majority of simple issues. Simply pressing the power button will not yield the same results. If the issue is with a device such as a cable box that is supplied by a service provider and all other equipment is functioning correctly, a call to the service provider would be the first step.
Should the homeowner purchase their own products?
The answer to this is almost always no. If your integration company provides all of your equipment, it will ensure some crucial items. First of all, you can rest assured that all of your purchased equipment will work together. Secondly, if any of the equipment is damaged or defective from the factory, the integrator will replace the unit at no extra cost. If the homeowner provides equipment and it requires the homeowner to drive to a big box store for a replacement, additional labor could be added if the technicians are waiting around or the potential for a return trip due to faulty equipment purchased by the homeowner.
How much am I going to spend on a home theater?
Having a budget in mind when first having the conversation with audio video expert will help your integrator to give you the best value for your project. A typical home theater that is prewired for a projector and surround sound starts around $8,000 to $14,000, and can go higher depending on customer expectations. In the $8-14K price range you would expect a projector, 100” screen, receiver, 5 or 7 speakers with sub, surge protectors and control system.
Which brand of home automation should I go with?
There are quite a few answers to this. While you can always install a couple of pieces of automation equipment that each require their own app yourself, hiring a custom integration company will ensure that you get the exact expectations you’ve set for your situation. Cutting the cord, benefits.
The term cutting the cord describes the usage of tvs or surround sound setups without the usage of cable boxes. Instead of service provider cable/satellite boxes, the homeowner would use a video streaming device such as an Apple TV, Roku, FireStick or ChromeCast. Using one of these streaming devices reduces the monthly cost to the service provider as cable boxes are not being rented. Streaming services are needed such as Netflix, Hulu and Disney +, each carrying a monthly fee. The overall cost of paying for internet service without cable boxes, even though you have to pay for streaming services, should be less.
How do I get better distance? Wireless mesh vs WAPs (Wireless Access Points).
To get better distance on your wifi, there are a couple of correct ways. WAPs will give you the furthest coverage, fastest speeds and best method to extend your wifi coverage. Think of each WAP being able to send wifi at the same speed and distance that it broadcasts from your wireless router. The downfall of using WAPs is that you have to get a hardwired cat5/6 cable to each WAP. The other method is a mesh network. You place a few devices around your home that can speak to one another. One unit is plugged into your router, the rest are plugged into outlets around your home. The first unit broadcasts fast and reliable wifi. The second and subsequent units accept wifi from the previous units and repeat the signal. The downfall of this is if a unit is too far away from strong internet, it will repeat a slower speed and possibly lose connection more often.
